Open Globe, Open Brain and a Retinal Detachment from a Wineglass

Drs. Sidney Schechet, Liliya Golas, James Reidy, Hassan Shah and Seenu Hariprasad present the case of a 62-year-old woman who fell during a Memorial Day barbeque and experienced eye and brain injuries from a shattered wineglass. Glass fragments entered her right orbit, causing a superonasal scleral laceration and a vitreous hemorrhage. The fragments penetrated the orbital roof and entered the brain. A frontal craniotomy was performed at the University of Chicago to remove the glass fragments, and the laceration was repaired. The patient recovered well.
