Reaching Across to Protect the Lens

    By Carl C. Awh, MD

    Retina/Vitreous

In this presentation from the Retinaws symposium at the 2011 Annual Meeting, Dr. Carl Awh reminds viewers to be vigilant in protecting the crystalline lens during vitreoretinal surgery. Transconjunctival systems offer an easy and often overlooked way for doing so. To keep a safe distance while maintaining access throughout the retina, Dr. Awh moves the infusion lines and the cutter between cannulas. With a chandelier light and by scleral depressing, the surgeon can inspect all aspects of the periphery for breaks without risk to the lens.
