Dr. Chirag Shah, of Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, demonstrates how he repaired a giant retinal tear that caused a macula-sparing retinal detachment in a patient elbowed in the eye during a basketball game. He begins by placing a scleral buckle, followed by 23-gauge vitrectomy, placement of a perfluorocarbon liquid to keep the macula attached during surgery, laser photocoagulation, air/fluid exchange, and tamponade with silicone oil. The patient, in his early 50s, continues to have good vision one year out.
