Combining Avastin with triamcinolone acetonide for wet AMD may reduce tachyphylaxis

This retrospective case series compared the biologic response after each subsequent injection of Avastin, preservative-free triamcinolone acetonide (pfTA) or a combination of Avastin and pfTA. Researchers used pre- and postinjection OCT results to calculate the change in retinal thickness in 43 patients. The biological response to Avastin decreased by 50 percent after 2.9 injections but reached this level only after 5.1 combination injections. Tachyphylaxis was not seen in the pfTA only group.
