  • Dr Jean D. A. Carruthers is Clinical Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she specializes in facial cosmetic surgery. Dr. Carruthers received her medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1971 and completed her Ophthalmology residency at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London, UK, in 1977. She completed her post-residency studies in Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia and the University of California, San Francisco in 1982. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She has been invited to give many presentations worldwide on topics in cosmetic surgery and has authored more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters. With her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she pioneered the cosmetic use of botulinum A exotoxin and has remained at the forefront of research and teaching about this procedure. Together they have authored and edited 5 textbooks on the cosmetic uses of Botulinum A Exotoxins and Fillers and have participated in numerous international research trials studying these new agents. She has been President of the British Columbia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, the Canadian Laser Aesthetic Surgery Society and the Foundation of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Carruthers has been honored by being invited to join the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery , the American Dermatological Association and Women in Dermatology and with Dr Alastair Carruthers has received the Kligman award from the American Society for Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery. She has been profiled in numerous publications including Best Doctors in Canada, New York Times, Allure, Time, Newsweek and Vogue. She has also been featured on the television program 20/20 as well as many others.
