Fourth-generation fluoroquinolones may be more effective than third-generation fluoroquinolones in preventing endophthalmitis after cataract surgery

This 10-year retrospective review of all cataract surgeries performed at a single site found an endophthalmitis rate of 0.197 percent with third-generation fluoroquinolones compared to 0.056 percent with fourth-generation fluoroquinolones (gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin). The authors conclude that more studies and data must be collected to determine whether topical prophylaxis is truly beneficial.
