Researchers examined conjunctival biopsies taken during cataract surgery from the inferior fornix of 20 primary open-angle glaucoma patients and 10 controls. Half of the glaucoma patients received latanoprost 0.005% monotherapy and half timolol 0.5%. The amount of collagen fibers and amorphous material was lower in latanoprost-treated conjunctival specimens compared with timolol ones and expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMPs) was comparatively upregulated. Timolol-treated eyes demonstrated upregulation of CD68 antibodies, an indicator of inflammatory infiltration.
