Anne Coleman elected to National Academy of Medicine

Anne L. Coleman, MD, PhD, professor of ophthalmology at UCLA Stein Eye Institute, was elected last week to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for her commitment to service and outstanding professional achievement. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.

In addition to her work as a glaucoma and cataract surgeon, Dr. Coleman serves as professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, researching the public health impact, risk factors, causes and treatments of blindness around the world. As director of the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic, she also provides care to underserved populations.

“These newly elected members are outstanding professionals who care deeply about advancing health and health care in the U.S. and globally,” said NAM President Victor Dzau. “Their expertise will help our organization address pressing health challenges and improve health, science and medicine for the benefit of us all.”

Established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the NAM – formerly named the Institute of Medicine –  is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields. NAM serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as adviser to the nation and the international community. Through its domestic and global initiatives, the NAM works to address critical issues in health, medicine and related policy and inspire positive action across sectors.
