Johnson & Johnson Vision has completed its $4.3 billion purchase of Abbott Medical Optics (AMO).

Originally announced in September 2016, the acquisition includes products for cataract surgery, laser refractive surgery and consumer eye health.

In July 2016, AMO received approval for their Tecnis Symfony IOL, an extended depth of focus IOL that incorporates a second diffractive optic technology to reduce chromatic aberration, boost image quality and elongate the range of focus to provide a continuous range of vision at near, intermediate and distance.

The company also made headlines in 2015 when it received FDA approval for their iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio System, a 3-D eye mapping tool used during LASIK to identify and correct each patients’ unique corneal topography.

The same technology is used by NASA to measure, shape and identify imperfections in the mirrors of the James Webb Space telescope.
