  • Novartis announced a net income of $2.42 billion in the first quarter of 2013, a 7 percent increase from the same quarter last year.

    Alcon tallied $2.57 billion in sales, up 1 percent from $2.54 billion in the same quarter last year. Novartis' quarterly operating income rose 6 percent to $2.9 billion, while Alcon's operating income rose 13 percent to $412 million. Alcon attributed this growth to productivity improvements, cost-containment efforts and revenue growth.

    Ophthalmic pharmaceutical sales grew 5 percent for Alcon.
