    Accomplishing Things That Matter

    Dear Colleagues and Friends,

As you peruse this Annual Report, I think you’ll be struck by a number of things. One of them, perhaps the most important, is that the Foundation accomplishes things that matter! It’s not just one or two programs, but a spectrum from professional education, to public education, to public service, to best-in-the world quality of care research. And the impact is sustained.

More recently, the Foundation was essential to the development of the IRIS Clinical Data Registry. It required an investment of over $10 million. And it demanded of both the Academy and of the Foundation Board of Trustees a sense of vision and of commitment to build an infrastructure and the analytic technology necessary to succeed. The result is a transformative tool with impacts on federal policy, population-based research, quality of care and professional analytics.

Next year we will witness the opening of the world’s only comprehensive, publicly-accessible Museum of the Eye. The lion’s share of the funding comes from our colleagues and Academy members—most notably, Drs. Stan Truhlsen and Mike Marmor. It’s a reflection of our own professional commitment to our heritage and to public education.

Finally, as you read this report, note the generosity of your friends and colleagues. Please thank them on behalf of us all.

    Best regards,
