The FDA has cleared for sale in the United States the Navilas 577s, a navigated focal and peripheral laser photocoagulation system.

Dr. David Brown, of Retina Consultants of Houston, Texas, was the first U.S. physician to treat patients with the new Navilas 577s before FDA clearance. "I am very impressed with the new Navilas 577s PRP. It feels ergonomic and straightforward - the system literally lets me paint the peripheral retina with uniform spots in a very short amount of time. It was very well tolerated by the patients, with only topical anesthesia. Navilas now has an industry leading PRP tool to complement its unrivaled and already well-known focal laser capability."

The all-digital system enables physicians to pre-plan laser therapy on diagnostic images, then precisely execute the treatment map using computer guidance. The manufacturer, OD-OS, says the Navilas 577s is the only retinal laser that can perform focal laser treatments without a contact lens, and uses infrared illumination rather than an uncomfortable bright light. It also provides a large field of view and assisted pattern positioning.

The 577s has the same features as the Navilas 577+ system, but is more compact and affordable. The 577s is indicated for treatment of diabetic macular edema, choroidal neovascularization, central and branch RVO, lattice degeneration and retinal tears (laser retinopexy).
