In this interview from ASRS 2021, Dr. Nieraj Jain discusses the one-year data from an observational study on pentosan polysulfate maculopathy (PPS), which showed that the condition impacts visual function more than previously assumed. The prospective study monitored patients through exhaustive visual function testing as well as patient-reported outcome measures, and found that their functional vision had declined more than visual acuity alone would suggest. The study additionally found that patients who are more significantly impacted early on by PPS—those who have geographic atrophy in the macula, for example—showed continued enlargement of those areas of atrophy after medication was suspended. For that reason, says Dr. Jain, early detection and continued follow-up are critical elements for patients with a toxic maculopathy.
