External Drainage of Subretinal Fluid

In this 1-Minute Video, Drs. Peter Belin, Peter Tang, and Will Parke demonstrate a technique for external drainage of subretinal fluid during retinal detachment repair. They use an external drainage and depression device with a retractable 28-gauge needle attached to the extrusion line for aspiration. After scleral buckle placement, they position the depressor in the most bullous area and the needle is inserted into the subretinal space for aspiration. The needle can be removed as the retina begins to flatten, but indentation was maintained to avoid any hemorrhage.
