Dr. Yan Wang demonstrates the minimally invasive small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedure, which results in less damage to the cornea, better postoperative visual acuity, and faster recovery. The procedure starts with a ventricular cut that depends on high-quality scanning and good centration. A cotton swab is used to keep the eye stable to prevent damage to the conjunctiva and absorb excess fluid from the conjunctival sac. The C-shaped movement along the edge of the lenticule separates the anterior side of the lenticule while the S-shaped movement separates the posterior side. Afterward, the lenticule can be grasped by a forceps and extracted.
