Mechanisms and Treatment of Strabismus After Ocular Surgery

    AAO 2023
    Comprehensive Ophthalmology, Strabismus

Adults who undergo ocular surgery (e.g., glaucoma drainage device implantation, scleral buckle) have a risk of developing strabismus, particularly in the immediate postsurgical period. According to Dr. Federico Velez, a panelist at the AAO 2023 symposium on "Adult Strabismus for the Comprehensive Ophthalmologist," predisposing factors for strabismus development include a previous history of strabismus and/or amblyopia, macular disease, and multiple surgeries. Dr. Velez also describes mechanisms and treatment options, such as pterygium excision, relaxing tight conjunctiva, and freeing superior oblique entrapments.
