Cataract surgery improves vision in patients with all levels of AMD

This cohort study included 1,244 patients (1,939 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery while enrolled in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). After adjusting for age at surgery, gender, type and severity of cataract, visual acuity improved by a mean of 8.4 letters in eyes without AMD (P < 0.0001), 6.1 letters with mild AMD (P < 0.0001), 3.9 letters with moderate AMD (P < 0.0001) and 1.9 letters with advanced AMD (P = 0.04). Statistically significant acuity gains were maintained at last follow-up, an average of 1.4 years after surgery.
