The Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study (CAREDS) enrolled women aged 50 to 79 years who had either high or low dietary intake of lutein plus zeaxanthin. Researchers estimated fat intake over a four-year period through responses to food frequency questionnaires and followed subjects for three years. Diets high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids were linked to greater intermediate AMD prevalence, while monounsaturated fatty acid intake was associated with lower prevalence.
