Genetic test for keratoconus to launch in 2017

Avellino Labs has developed a genetic screening test to predict keratoconus risk in Asian patients.

After sequencing DNA from more than 200 keratoconus patients worldwide, Avellino identified 4 variations within 3 genes that confer a significantly greater risk for keratoconus. These variants were found in 9% to 21% of keratoconus patients in Korea. Due to the high prevalence within an Asian population, Avellino plans to launch the test in Korea, Japan and China in the first quarter of 2017.

The company plans to expand the diagnostic platform, and aims to provide a comprehensive assay for definitive keratoconus risk factors for patients across the world.
