High risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy with extensive neovascularization of the optic nerve, retinal hemorrhages, retinal microaneurysms, and macular edema. Vascular endothelial growth factor is implicated in macular edema and in neovascularization of the retina, optic nerve head, and even the anterior segment.
