  • Jerome W. Bettman, Sr, MD

    Born and raised in California, Jerome W. Bettman, Sr, MD devoted his life to the practice and study of ophthalmology. He studied at the University of California, San Francisco and trained in ophthalmology at Stanford University where he held the position of Professor Emeritus until his death in August 2006 at the age of 97. Dr. Bettman became a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1948 and was instrumental in the conception, development, and implementation of the Academy's Code of Ethics. Dr. Bettman served as the first chairman of the Academy's Ethics Committee from 1984 to 1988. He published numerous articles and a text on the subject of medical ethics. It is with great admiration and gratitude that the Academy's lecture series on medical ethics is dedicated to and named for Jerome W. Bettman, Sr., MD.
