Lateral position of the laser focal zone can be controlled using scanning mirrors, while axial position is controlled by shifting the lens along the beam. A tightly focused short-pulse laser beam can create dielectric breakdown (or plasma) in its focus. Dielectric breakdown creates transient vapor bubbles in tissue, resulting in micro-ruptures. By scanning with dense placement of the spots, a continuous plane can be cut in any part of transparent tissue.
