Diversity, equity, and inclusion are foundational values in medicine and medical education. However, educational models guiding the creation of inclusive learning environments to promote these values are limited in ophthalmology training programs.

This symposium from AAO 2022 highlights best practices to foster a belonging mindset, embrace learner diversity, mitigate implicit bias, and develop an inclusive, anti-racist lens in medical education. Panelists share case studies to show how exclusionary learning environments impact learners, to identify specific strategies for creating supportive inclusionary learning environments, such as upstander/bystander training, and discuss ways to engage key institutional stakeholders in integrating inclusive concepts into the training program.
