It's likely not surprising to most people that a highly combative and physical sport like professional mixed martial arts (MMA) involves frequent eye injuries. However little research has been done into the prevalence, patterns, and characteristics of these injuries. In this fourth American Society of Ophthalmic Trauma (ASOT) "Sports-Related Ocular Trauma" Symposium talk from AAO 2023, Dr. Michael Fliotsos shares the results of his recent study, which suggest that while most MMA eye injuries were not serious enough to require referral to an ophthalmologist, injuries were a frequent occurrence and could significantly impact the game, with the majority of fighters who sustained eye injuries losing their bout and requiring weeks with no contact for recovery.
