Changing inclusion criteria for corneal crosslinking may significantly reduce complication, failure rate

This prospective study included 99 patients (117 eyes) with progressive keratectasia who underwent standard crosslinking. At 12 months the complication rate was 2.9 percent; failure rate, 7.6 percent. The authors identified age and preoperative visual acuity as significant risk factors for complications, and a high preoperative maximum keratometry (K) reading as a risk factor for failure. They conclude that a preoperative maximum K reading less than 58.00 diopters may reduce the failure rate to less than 3 percent, and restricting patient age to younger than 35 years may reduce the complication rate to 1 percent.
