Ophthalmology is a specialized discipline of caring for the eyes and the visual system based on medical principles. Professionalism in ophthalmology encompasses both art and science and includes the following specific competencies: comprehensive medical training and experience to permit and foster recognition of the spectrum of normal physical variation, understanding of normal physiologic and pathophysiologic reactions (including cause/effect relationships), knowledge of the boundaries of medical science, judgment to apply accumulated wisdom appropriately, accountability to patients, society and the profession, and humanity to attend with honesty and empathy.
Collegiality is commonly thought of as simply treating a colleague with honesty and respect; however a deeper look at the term offers these insights: as a component of professionalism, collegiality involves shared responsibility to the profession, communication of medical knowledge among colleagues, and adherence to a professional code of conduct. Ophthalmologists must adhere to appropriate standards of ethics and professionalism to maintain the public’s trust in the medical profession.
