    Glaucoma

Laser trabecular surgery provides a clinically significant reduction of IOP in about 75% of initial treatments, but many patients continue to need topical medications after the laser surgery. The laser energy is applied to the trabecular meshwork for 180 or 360 degrees. Postoperative complications include inflammation and elevated IOP. Within 2 to 5 years, about 50% of patients will need additional medical or surgical therapy because of decay of IOP control. It is unlikely that laser trabeculoplasty will allow for the discontinuation of topical medications.
