    ¿Qué es una catarata?

    El lente natural y transparente en nuestro ojo ayuda a enfocar la luz, lo que nos permite ver con claridad. A medida que envejecemos, el lente se vuelve opaco. Las cosas se ven borrosas, difusas, opacas, o menos coloridas. Esta condición se llama catarata. Una cirugía es la única forma de eliminar cataratas. Su médico extirpa el lente natural opaco del ojo y lo sustituye por un lente intraocular artificial (LIO).

    ¿Qué es el glaucoma?

    Cuando usted tiene glaucoma, el fluido natural en el ojo (llamado humor acuoso) no fluye hacia afuera del ojo tan fácilmente como debería. El área por donde el líquido sale del ojo (llamada ángulo de drenaje) se bloquea. El líquido se acumula, provocando un aumento en la presión ocular. Esta presión causa daño al nervio óptico. El nervio óptico envía señales desde el ojo al cerebro para que usted pueda ver. Si la presión ocular elevada no es tratada con medicamentos, cirugía, o ambos, puede producirse una ceguera.

    El tratamiento de glaucoma y cataratas al mismo tiempo

    Las cataratas y el glaucoma son dos de las enfermedades oculares más comunes en el mundo. Ambas enfermedades son más comunes en las personas a medida que envejecen. Muchas personas con cataratas también tienen glaucoma. Si una catarata hace difícil ver con claridad, y la presión ocular no está donde debiera a pesar de un tratamiento con medicina o con láser, su médico puede sugerir una cirugía de cataratas y glaucoma al mismo tiempo.
