Pars Plana Posterior Capsulectomy and Anterior Vitrectomy

    By Kenneth W. Wright, MD
    Cataract/Anterior Segment, Pediatric Ophth/Strabismus

In this case, a child who underwent previous cataract surgery and IOL implantation has developed a posterior capsular opacity. A pars plana posterior capsulectomy and anterior vitrectomy are performed to clear the opacity. By placing the infusion cannula in the anterior chamber, only one pars plana incision is required for the microvitrector. Movements are slow and steady to avoid tugging on vitreous. While Dr. Wright typically performs a YAG posterior capsulotomy in these cases, the technique demonstrated is helpful in patients too young to cooperate.
